Just Back: An Expedition To Emir Kusturica Film And Music Festival

A woman from L.A. has been to Serbia and back, to attend the Kustendorf Film and music festival. The festival was organised by film-maker Emir Kusturica with whom Depp made Arizona Dream back in the early 90s. She put up a blog post recounting a memorable trip to Serbia. “Overall I found it to be a really stimulating and artistically inspiring event, in a melancholy and beautiful part of the world.” She said. She also found Serbian people very friendly. Here’s one snippet:

“People there really are very friendly, helpful and kind, smiling is not widely practiced, but staring is. As soon as help is requested or a question is asked though the somber mask will be broken and people bend over backwards in helpful kindness.”

Don’t just read this snippet, read the whole thing (just one thing: Kustarica? It’s Kusturica). It goes on to talk about the absurd, the irreverent, accordions and cigarettes. Oh Yeah, this is why we love Serbia!
